Flat tires changed the overall standings in this race, though Will Walton had secured his season victory in Race 1.
After the first race, Yozell was in 4th, Jeff Johnson in 5th, Smolko in 6th. Remember, that Yozell rode the first race on a front flat tubular tire just to get some points. That proved critical. He did not start race 2. Within Race 2, Andrew Freye flatted out, and Darrell Engel was not contesting the race possibly giving Smolko some more points.
Jeff Johnson went for the win, chasing Will Walton to the finish, and earned himself a 2nd place in this race with 30 points. That put him above Mike Yozell. Smolko still had a shot at 5th, though. If he could get 5th or better in the race, he would tie Yozell on points, and since Yozell didn’t start, Smolko would earn the higher place (5th). However, the last race of 2019, everyone wants to try their best. Sean Smith had a great ride to 3rd. Tom Repokoe in 4th. Last year’s 5th place finisher Andrew Dudle, who was taken out of contention for 5th in Race 1, placed 5th in the last race. Last season’s 2nd place overall, Jonathan Ruiz, placed 6th, and Scott Molnar and Sonny Lutz rounded out for 7th and 8th.
Who won 5th? Mike Yozell. By 4 points.
By not starting, Jeff Johnson going for the race win, and Smolko finishing outside the top 5, Yozell found himself (surprisingly) in 5th place overall.
All was not lost for Smolko, though. 9th place, #36, Ryan Smolko won the Montgomerville Cyclery growler of Funk Brewing beer. A fitting consolation prize for 6th place overall in 2019.
